Attorneys and staff in the San Diego office of Best Best & Krieger LLP volunteered their time earlier this month to stuff backpacks -- bought and donated by the firm -- with new school supplies for homeless students.

The effort is part of Operation Backpack, organized by Volunteers of America. Each of BB&K's eight offices throughout California participated in the effort. The firm purchased 350 backpacks at a reduced rate from JanSport, which itself donated 50 backpacks. The backpacks were stocked for students from kindergarten to 12th grade with supplies donated by OfficeMax and Bluebird Office Supplies.

BB&K is the only Southern California business to participate in the sixth annual backpack drive with the Sacramento-based affiliate of Volunteers of America, said Kim Castaneda, the organization's community relations manager.

The backpacks were distributed to homeless shelters and school districts on July 23.
