EL CENTRO, Calif. (AP) -- El Centro police Chief Leonard Knight, who has been feuding for months with members of his own department, has resigned.
City Manager Ruben Duran announced the resignation Wednesday afternoon. Knight said he would not comment.
In recent months, officers spoke of low morale in the department and a lack of confidence in their chief. A sergeant called for Knight's resignation at a city council meeting in March.
A former police chief for the city, Harold Carter, will return to the job on an interim basis. He also previously served as Imperial County sheriff.
El Centro has 42,000 residents and is about 120 miles east of San Diego, near the U.S.-Mexican border.
